These pencil drawings are based on imagery taken from a wall painting discovered in the “Villa dei Mistri” in Pompeii, Italy. Collated into a zine titled Villa of the Mysteries, Cudahy paired newsprint reproductions of the drawings with sections from a diagram of the wall painting. In isolating and re-appropriating fragments from these historically contested scenes—which perhaps depict an allegory for marriage, or alternatively, an initiation into a Dionysian cult—Cudahy investigates the collapse and reconstruction of images when voided of their original context.
Anthony Cudahy, b. 1989, Florida, is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY.
