With its playful illustrations of urban life and encoded phonetic captions, Joana Avillez and Molly Young’s D C-T! is an homage to both New York City and author William Steig. The book contains a section for each of the four seasons.This original drawing heralds the arrival of spring, and with it, “L-R-G” (allergy, in the authors’ encoded language). Joana Avillez, b. 1986, New York, received a BFA in painting from The Rhode Island School of Design, and an MFA in illustration at School of Visual Arts. She co-authored D C-T! (Penguin Press 2018) with Molly Young and illustrated Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham (Random House 2014). Her illustrations can be found in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Vogue, New York Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Refinery29, Paper Magazine, and more.
