Joana Avillez
Boy Pointing at Trash, D C-T!, 2017, Unframed

Co-authored by Joana Avillez and Molly Young, D-CT! is a collection of illustrations about life in New York City, accompanied by William Steig-inspired phonetic captions. These original elements reflect the less savoury elements of the urban landscape. In the book, the boy points at the wriggling pile of trash rats, exclaiming “S-L-I-F!” (it’s alive!). Joana Avillez, b. 1986, New York, received a BFA in painting from The Rhode Island School of Design, and an MFA in illustration at School of Visual Arts. She co-authored D C-T! (Penguin Press 2018) with Molly Young and illustrated Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham (Random House 2014). Her illustrations can be found in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Vogue, New York Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Refinery29, Paper Magazine, and more.
