Joana Avillez
D C-T Subway Pole, D C-T!, 2017, Framed

Joana Avillez and Molly Young’s D C-T! is “a book of puzzles in the key of New York.” Featuring Avillez’s playful illustrations and William Steig-inspired phonetic captions, the book provides a portrait of New York City and its inhabitants in all their idiosyncrasy. This title image, produced for the book, neatly encapsulates the spirit of “D C-T” (the city) itself. Joana Avillez, b. 1986, New York, received a BFA in painting from The Rhode Island School of Design, and an MFA in illustration at School of Visual Arts. She co-authored D C-T! (Penguin Press 2018) with Molly Young and illustrated Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham (Random House 2014). Her illustrations can be found in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Vogue, New York Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Refinery29, Paper Magazine, and more.
