This multi-piece work by Dieter Roth was part of the SMS portfolio’s sixth and final volume. SMS (Shit Must Stop) was a subscription based bi-monthly art journal maintained by artist WIlliam Copley, representing some of the most significant artists of the 20th century. The portfolio, released in 1968, gathered “original reproductions” by both world famous and obscure artists in an affordable mail-order subscription of six volumes - bypassing the museum and gallery institution. These exacting replicas were produced using obscure and varied methods, such as Dieter Roth’s contribution: four cards wrapped in blue paper intended to be accompanied by a molded, sculpted chocolate bar - complete with the original paper clipped note of instruction.
