Ed Ruscha
Course of Empire, 2005, Framed

This original poster is from the exhibition Course of Empire: Paintings by Ed Ruscha—the United States’ contribution to the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005. Ruscha borrowed the exhibition title from a set of 19th century Thomas Cole paintings of the same name, as well as borrowing content from an earlier 1992 series of his own paintings. Revisiting the industrial sites from which these original black and white works were made, he produced new color paintings of the same views. The two sets of paintings, new and old, were displayed side-by-side, quietly remarking how ‘change comes over things.’

Ed Ruscha, b. 1937, is a multi-media artist working across painting, printmaking, photography and artist books. Ruscha lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
