Ed Ruscha, Baby Jet, 2001, Framed

This poster from Ed Ruscha’s 2001 exhibition at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh, features the 1998 painting Baby Jet. Here, the detached yet arresting slogan hovers in front of a majestic mountain range. Creating what the artist himself has described as “anonymous backdrops for the drama of words”, Ruscha pairs apparently unrelated images with text, effecting a near synaesthetic encounter with the shifting emblems of American life. Ed Ruscha, b. 1937, is a multi-media artist working across painting, printmaking, photography and artist books. Ruscha lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
