This poster from Ed Ruscha’s 2001 exhibition at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh, features the 1998 painting Baby Jet. Here, the detached yet arresting slogan hovers in front of a majestic mountain range. Creating what the artist himself has described as “anonymous backdrops for the drama of words”, Ruscha pairs apparently unrelated images with text, effecting a near synaesthetic encounter with the shifting emblems of American life.
Ed Ruscha, b. 1937, is a multi-media artist working across painting, printmaking, photography and artist books. Ruscha lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
