Joan Didion, Framed

This in-progress portrait features writer Joan Didion. The final version was part of The Paris Review’s publication Women at Work, including a collection of twelve interviews introduced by Ottessa Moshfegh and illustrated by Joana Avillez. Published in October 2017, the limited edition book spans the history of The Paris Review with celebrated figures ranging from Simone de Beauvoir to Toni Morrison. Avillez also illustrated Didion for a special edition T-shirt as part of the Kickstarter campaign for the 2017 documentary film Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold—the first and only documentary about the author. Joana Avillez, b. 1986, New York, received a BFA in painting from The Rhode Island School of Design, and an MFA in illustration at School of Visual Arts. She is the author of Life Dressing and illustrated Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham.
