This unique watercolour was originally published in September 2016 in The New Yorker online as part of the story, Rat Real Estate of New York. The illutration depicts a rat docking its row boat to a leaky drainpipe along the flowing “canal” that is in fact a sewer duct.
Joana Avillez, b. 1986, New York, received a BFA in painting from The Rhode Island School of Design, and an MFA in illustration at School of Visual Arts. She is the author of Life Dressing, and recently illustrated Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham.
