Meret Oppenheim
The Mirror of Genoveva, SMS Portfolio No. 2, 1968

This debossed print is Surrealist artist Meret Oppenheim’s contribution to the SMS portfolio’s second volume. SMS (Shit Must Stop) was a subscription based bi-monthly art journal maintained by artist WIlliam Copley, representing some of the most significant artists of the 20th century. The portfolio, released in 1968, gathered carefully constructed “original reproduction” limited edition multiples by both world famous and obscure artists in an affordable mail-order subscription of six volumes - bypassing the museum and gallery institution. Oppenheim’s print contains a fur-adorned handheld mirror with a hoof for a handle - a 2D rendering of her sculptural explorations in gazelle fur-covered objects. A facsimile signature and artist notes are featured on the back of the work. Debossed offset print Edition of 2000 The Letter Edged in Black Press 10 × 6.75 inches unframed
