In this surreal diptych, nonchalant mermaids drape themselves across the heads, laps, and plates of socialites in formal settings. Steeped in fantasy and inflected with an early modern European sensibility, Pauline de Roussy de Sales’ work often evokes the playful and layered narratives of illustrated children’s literature. As she draws directly onto the copper plate, she notes, “I’m telling myself the story as I go along.”
