In her small-scale works, Pauline de Roussy de Sales regularly draws from the imagery of childhood and children’s literature. The figure of the mermaid, in particular, recurs frequently in her intaglio prints, which she creates in a imaginative process that she likens to playing with dolls. This etching was drawn directly onto the plate and colored with a Grecian palette of blues and whites, inverted from the first version of the scene.
