Rachel Schultz
midnight, 2018, Framed

Frequently working from models, Rachel Schultz uses the human figure to explore psychological themes such as anxiety, impulse, and relations between self and other. In this piece, a series of related gestures unfold across the page. Drawn intuitively and in sequence, these forms can be read as the physical manifestations of the figure’s shifting emotional landscape. The artist writes, “the act of one movement affects the act of our next movement. If self-contempt is present, our next gesture will not naturally be optimistic or confident.” Rachel Schultz, b. 1992, New York, is an artist based in New York City.
