Joana Avillez
Natural History Museum, D C-T!, 2017, Framed

Co-authored by Joana Avillez and Molly Young, D-CT! is a collection of illustrations about life in New York City, accompanied by William Steig-inspired phonetic captions. The authors capture the city from every angle—from park benches to bodegas, beaches to garbage-strewn alleys. In this original illustration, visitors at the Museum of Natural History peruse the wildlife dioramas, taking in “L-F-Ns” (elephants), “C L-I-Ns” (sea lions), and “K-O-Ts” (coyotes). Joana Avillez, b. 1986, New York, received a BFA in painting from The Rhode Island School of Design, and an MFA in illustration at School of Visual Arts. She co-authored D C-T! (Penguin Press 2018) with Molly Young and illustrated Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham (Random House 2014). Her illustrations can be found in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Vogue, New York Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Refinery29, Paper Magazine, and more.
