These gestural C prints by Pia Howell capture a certain energy and playfulness. Made in a darkroom, Howell places stencils and transparencies onto photo paper then exposes the materials to a color-filtered light. The results are expressive and painterly compositions, bursting with abstract shapes, lines, and loosely-figurative strokes. Described by Howell as oscillating between “representation and abstraction,” the works speak the language of emotion and mark-making.
