An homage to both New York City and author William Steig, Joana Avillez and Molly Young’s book D C-T! pairs illustrations of city life with captions written in phonetic code. The book is populated with all kinds of New York “N 8-Fs” (natives), including seedy watch dealers, anarchists, museum-goers, rats, birds, and dogs. In this original illustration, a polar bear at the Central Park Zoo turns his back to his visitors; the book’s caption, reading “X-I-L” (exile), highlights the strangeness of his presence in the urban landscape.
Joana Avillez, b. 1986, New York, received a BFA in painting from The Rhode Island School of Design, and an MFA in illustration at School of Visual Arts. She co-authored D C-T! (Penguin Press 2018) with Molly Young and illustrated Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham (Random House 2014). Her illustrations can be found in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Vogue, New York Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Refinery29, Paper Magazine, and more.
