This broadside is an example of Richard Kostelanetz’s numerical art. His work investigates language, and the relationship between systems and sequences of words and numerals. Evolving was included in Kostelanetz’s 1978 traveling retrospective, organized by the Simon Fraser University, titled Wordsand.
Richard Kostelanetz (b. 1940) is a writer, artist, critic and editor. His mediums include prints, books, sound and film. In 1965, he received the Pulitzer Fellowship in critical writing, and was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1967. His films have been nominated in different festivals, including the Ann Arbor Film Festival, and his book Poem & Stories was selected as part of the best books of 1976 by the American Institute of Graphic Arts. He now lives and works in New York.
