This silkscreen print is one in a series of related prints, composed of ritually-created marks and image fragments from an ongoing project Nelson refers to as “Peripheries.” They derive in part from easily discarded content both online and in print, as well as from the artist’s own body of experimental output and material fragments. For Outer Imposition..., the image is seen as an overlooked remnant, the excess of cultural expression, the detritus of communication, a specimen of archaeological study. Fragmented and amputated from its existence in the margins, the image is further intervened upon and shaped into a visual language for other works in the series.
Nelson is a recent graduate of the Yale University School of Art, MFA (2015). He now lives and works in Minneapolis.
