In this series, Leanne Shapton illustrates a selection of desserts included in the 1929 textbook Woman’s Institute Library of Cookery, an encyclopedic five-volume reference book on home cooking. With vibrant background washes of watercolor, Shapton revitalizes the cheery tones of recipes like gelatino, orange jelly, and in this work, a strawberry shortcake. The series was originally published in T: The New York Times Style Magazine in July 2015, as part of the artist’s series of new works drawn from old books.
