Little is known about the artist who produced this unique work, found in a portfolio of gouaches in Portland, Oregon, dating from the 1940s. Attached to the portfolio were notes that read “two designs due by Friday,” suggesting they were studies for graphic, textile, fashion or wallpaper design. Due to their era and location, the abstract designs have been linked to the Portland-based swimwear label Jantzen, whose graphic approach is consistent with Engdahl’s small gouaches.
