The Living Theatre
Bertolt Brecht, Man Is Man, 1962, Framed

The Living Theatre, founded in 1947, is the oldest operating experimental theatre in the US, located in New York City. At the time this advertisement was printed the theatre was located at 6th Avenue and 14th Street in Manhattan. This poster was made for the theatre’s production of Bertolt Brecht’s play Man Is Man. The elephant motif behind the text of the image is most likely a reference to the play’s interlude -- a surrealistic one-act farce called “The Elephant Calf,” which offers an absurd, alternative reality for the protagonist of Man Is Man.
