In this etching, William Wegman portrays a woodpecker on a branch with great detail. Labeled “Fig. 158” in the corner, the work resembles a page that could be found in nature guidebooks—many of which Wegman read as a child and has collected in his studio. In this work, Wegman inserts his name into the grooves of the tree bark. Fig. 158 (Wood Pecker) has never been exhibited before.
William Wegman, b. 1943, Holyoke, Massachusetts, works in various mediums including painting, drawing, video, and photography. Wegman lives and works in New York and Maine.
